The Forests of the Poles

Would you think I was crazy if I told you that there were lush, dense forests on both poles of the planet? I am afraid that truth is much stranger than fiction, folks! There are in fact MASSIVE forests of algae/seaweeds under the icy waters of both the North and South Poles. The ‘forests’ rival that of the kelp forests found off the coast of California in the Pacific Ocean.

Perhaps the most amazing part of this discovery is the fact that these unique plants are being analyzed for the chemicals they release, which may lead to breakthroughs in the treatment of cancer and other difficult-to-cure diseases. Simply amazing.

The Glowing Critters of the Deep

The creatures of the dark depths of the ocean are some of the strangest and most mysterious in the world. One common adaptation for these creatures is the ability to glow in the dark, known as bioluminescence. This glow is created by special types of chemical reactions in bacteria, and the results are spectacular. There is a great video by National Geographic on the subject, containing some fantastic footage of these rarely seen deep sea denizens.

I wish to someday dive that deep in the ocean! =)
